First look at the new North Surrey Arenas replacement project
Long-term plans for the City Centre have always imagined the re-development of the North Surrey Recreation Centre site, which currently separates the new City Hall, Library, and plaza from Central City to the south. The first step to re-development is building new recreation facilities elsewhere, a step that the City committed to with its 2015 budget, which set aside money to relocate the ice arenas.
Last year, the City announced it would pursue the development of the new arenas, along with a spectator stadium in ‘South Westminster’, the official name for the area near the Scott Road SkyTrain station. Although the P3 process to build a stadium fell through, the City is moving forward with its plans to build three new ice sheets on the site.
Council has now approved detailed design and construction of the $46 million facility. Construction is expected to being next spring, with completion by summer 2019.
