Massey Tunnel replacement continues to move forward

Massey Tunnel replacement continues to move forward

The Province has wrapped up Phase 1 of consultations on the Massey Tunnel replacement project. According to the report on Phase 1, the top three issues residents want addressed with the project are congestion, economic growth, and transport alternatives.

Phase 2 will begin on March 11th, setting out a number of alternative options and criteria to determine the preferred choice. You’ll be able to submit your responses online, or in person at one of three meetings:

Richmond
Wednesday, March 13
Richmond Oval
6111 River Road
6 pm to 9 pm

Surrey
Thursday, March 14
Sullivan Hall
6306 152 St
6 pm to 9 pm

Delta
Saturday, March 16
Coast Tsawwassen Inn
1665 56 St
10 am to 1 pm

The government launched the Massey Tunnel replacement project in September 2012 – in other words, when it wants something built, it makes it happen. Meanwhile, transit expansion continues to languish.

It doesn’t surprise me because when it comes to the tunnel, Translink and other agencies aren’t involve. Not blaming Translink but the more agencies you layer on top, the more finger pointing happens. With transit you have Translink finger pointing at everyone else “We provide alternatives and options but no decisions” then you have the Province pointing saying “It is the provinces and mayors that need to decide and do things.” and then the Mayors saying “we have no legal ability to make decisions. It has to be the Province and Translink.” and years later just a pile of finger pointing.

With the tunnel, it is the Province. That’s it. That’s all. So if it doesn’t get done they can only blame themselves, they can’t blame anyone else. So they get stuff done.
