Aquatic centres under construction

Construction is now beginning on the two new aquatic centres that are part of the Build Surrey program.  The aquatic centres, which are being constructed in the Guildford and Grandview Heights areas of Surrey, are to include facilities meant to ensure residents’ access to world-class sporting opportunities as well as allow the city to expand its aquatic programming and host major swimming and diving events.

In Grandview Heights, there will be a 10-lane, 50-metre Olympic-sized pool, with Olympic calibre diving towers, a leisure pool with a waterslide, lazyriver and spray features, as well as a hot tub, children’s area, and fitness and weight room facilities.  There will also be outdoor artwork on display in the form of oversized chrome sculptures.  The budget for this facility is $50.9 million.

In Guildford, there will be an 8-lane, 50-metre Olympic-sized pool, springboard diving, a leisure pool with a waterslide, lazy river and spray features, as well as a hot tub, children’s area, and fitness and weight room facilities.  Outside, another feature will be the landscaping which is intended to act both as a sound barrier for traffic along 152st, and as a stormwater management system.  The budget for this facility is $40.7 million.

Completion of these facilities is expected in fall 2014
