The planned Civic Centre project is located almost entirely on what is City owned land. The land has actually proven to be a very valuable asset as the City attempts to jumpstart more development in the City Centre with the ambitious Civic Centre project. So valuable in fact that the City appears to be buying up a number of plots of land in the downtown area – whether that is for redevelopment or simply property flipping while prices are cheap, nobody knows.
The latest property to be purchased is land that “The Brick” used to exist on – that building is now occupied by a cheap ripoff company called “The Bright”. The property (in red on the map above) was recently transferred from the City to the City’s Development Corporation arm.
The SCDC (Dev. Corp.) is already partnering with a private developer to build a four storey apartment building on City property at University Drive (134 St) and 104 Ave, adjacent to the Mayflower Co-op Tower.
One can only contemplate what the SCDC might be up to with this new plot of land.
