Big update on City Centre

City Centre Library

Bing Thom Architects was awarded the design contract for the new City Centre Library. They also designed the Central City tower. The Library, expected to be about 65,000 sq. ft. will be built on what is currently a parking lot, behind the North Surrey Rec Centre. The existing library and senior’s centre will remain open during construction. Due to it’s usage of stimulus funding, the library must be built by 2011.

Chuck Bailey Rec Centre

The Chuck Bailey Rec Centre has had its parking lot built. The Cube entrance is finished and the interior gym is finished. Plans for a $1.5 million youth skateboarding park next to the gym are underway, with completion for that project expected by 2011.

Proposal 7908-0250-00: A 4 storey apartment building with a two storey townhouse base at 13230 Old Yale Road. It will include 90 units of either studio, 1 bedroom + den, or 2 bedroom size. As the development is located on Old Yale Road, a planned Green Street and Heritage Street, the building will include a special corner feature at 132 St and Old Yale. It is envisioned to include a special paved plaza along with a heritage element.

Proposal 7909-0082-00: The Creekside Health and Housing Centre, a LEED Gold facility for people who require drug and alcohol treatment, rehabilitation, and/or supportive housing, will be built at 13670 94A Ave. The project was the result of an MOU between the City of Surrey and BC Housing. Creekside will include 44 supportive housing units, 32 stabilization and transitional living residence beds, a health care clinic, and a 24/7 sobering and assessment centre. The clinic and sobering centre will be on the ground level, while housing units will exist on the upper three storeys. The facility is located next to the Phoenix drug and recovery residence and the Creekside Withdrawal Management Centre.

Proposal 7909-0022-00: Timber Grove is a 52 unit, 3 storey apartment building that will housing the homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless. The project is part of the Olympic Legacy Housing Initiative, which will reconfigure temporary modular housing used in Whistler during the 2010 Games into permanent BC Housing buildings. Timber Grove will be located at 13922 101 Ave.

Proposal 7909-0137-00: Peterson Place is reuse of the former Howard Johnson Hotel near 132 St on King George Highway. It was purchased by BC Housing as part of the Provincial Housing Initiative, which sought to buy existing housing stock for those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Peterson Place will be composed of two main buildings, for a total of 56 supportive housing units. Internal renovations will be undertaken to bring the building up to code. Peterson Place currently houses people who were displaced from New Westminster, while a building in that city gets renovated, as well as Surrey residents who were formerly in a leased space from BC Housing.
