New bus shelters coming in December [exclusive]

Civic Surrey has obtained a rendering of the new bus shelters that will go up across the City in December, according to an official City of Surrey poster. The City has been working over a year on the design of the new shelters, made possible due to the current shelter contract ending.

The new shelters appear to be quite similar in design to the shelters in most cities in the region, featuring a metal body with glass siding and an ad on one side. One unique design element is the inclusion of a pillar with the City’s logo at the top. Vancouver, Delta, and Langley, among others, have had similar modern bus shelters for years.

For a closer look at a mix of our current shelters (which will hardly be missed in my opinion), check out this old post from when Civic Surrey launched.

I’m slightly worried about the glass design of the shelters. In comparison to other municipalities, smashed glass is a far more regular occurrence out here in Surrey – so regular in fact that the glass/plastic was removed from most shelters several years ago.

Seems like a real waste unless you own a glass company. Every shelter I have driven past has had the glass smashed in it within hours of it being installed or replaced. Better make them out of shatter proof glass or waste a ton of money doing maintenance every week.

Oh Surrey! For years we endured the sound & sight of shattered glass with the old Expo-style bus shelter outside our bedrooms' windows only to find out last night that the main advertising feature in the fashionable new structures is covered by shatterable glass. The answer — unbreakable polycarbonate — even if it scratches it can eventually be replaced. I've come to the conclusion that it's all a game. As long as the parties concerned get paid everyone is content to let the game play out. Everyone except the residents who have to listen to, or discover breakage, as well as view, and sometimes consolidate the glass waste.
How about easy find repair notification numbers? I have to spend considerable time to sleuth down a number. Haven't found it yet! Composed this email instead.
Please remove the removable graffiti “white pride”.
Personally I'm in favour of no shelters where vandalism is high. In a moment of kindness, how about free Pattison/City of Surrey umbrellas–Oh they make the posting of hot young women and men and their body parts difficult to display! En masse those illustrated umbrellas would make quite the display. Re. graffiti-ists: I suggest plain umbrellas for them to practice their freedom of expression. Complimentary grafitti instruments bearing the sponsor's names.
