The City, along with the SCDC, have selected a design consultant team for the Civic Centre project. Among a shortlist that including local heavyweights Bing Thom Architects, Busby Perkins + Will, and James Cheng Architects, the City has retained the services of Kasian Architecture in association with Moriyama + Teshima Architects. As the successful winner of the RFP, their initial design had to fulfill the vision below:
It is anticipated that the resulting design concept for the Civic Centre Project will complement the existing buildings and amenities in the immediate area, but will also provide a fresh urban design perspective that will bring new energy to the Surrey City Centre. The project is also expected to provide a strong example of environmental leadership – it is anticipated that the Civic Centre Project will achieve a LEED certification – and will use innovative approaches that results in a building that is cost-effective to construct and operate.
Here’s what the selection team had to say about the decision of Kasian and Moriyama + Teshima:
This team brings all of the design and technical skills that this project requires but in particular brings an intense focus on and understanding of the importance that the public open spaces will play in the City Centre. They also bring a very fresh focus on this part of the Surrey City Centre and come with an open, communicative and collaborative approach to the planning and design process. The evaluation team is confident that they will do a superb job.
The project will have a total floor area of 300,000 square feet, which includes a new City Hall, commercial space, and a Science and Innovation Centre for SFU. The construction of the building will be subject to federal funding. The sod is estimated to be turned by the end of next year.
