Fraser Valley Medical School coming soon

The future of the fastest-growing health authority in B.C. may include a “Fraser Valley Medical School” to provide doctors for local hospitals.

That’s according to Loretta Solomon, the executive director of the Surrey Memorial and Delta Hospitals.

She was speaking to Delta council Monday night about the Fraser Health Authority’s plans for the local hospital.

“Building a medical school in Fraser Health is something the CEO (Dr. Nigel Murray) believes in very strongly,” Solomon said.

“The need to recruit physicians is enormously important for us.”

I’ve heard rumours about this project that the FHA wants to get going. There was a story about this subject last year in the Sun mentioning that the FHA and the provincial government are looking to partner with either SFU or UBC – although SFU mentioned that their current infrastructure couldn’t support such an expansion.

I know that the City is actively pushing proponents to build this school in downtown Surrey. The synergies with the current SMH and SFU campuses are obvious, however, it might not be enough to prevent the school from opening in Abbotsford.
