The new City Hall! [pics]

Bing Thom Architects, the firm currently processing through the creation of the City Centre Plan, has released an update to council on their progress. The Plan itself is nearing the end of Phase II, and will soon develop Urban Design Guidelines. One section of the update includes a “Future Visions” page, describing a Surrey City Development:

This proposed Surrey City Development is envisioned to act as a catalyst to encourage future commercial growth in the City Centre. It will build on the positive momentum created by the new Simon Fraser University campus and Central City Development. It is a bold architectural vision that will include a new City Hall, a central library, a recreation centre, multi purpose exhibition space, a performance centre, a 49-storey office tower, and the opportunity for new Simon Fraser University facilities. The financial dynamics of this mixed-use development that will partner public and private business will stimulate new commercial development around the Surrey City Centre. It will provide an important civic focus that will enhance the future of Surrey and the region as a whole.

The 49-storey tower rises behind the existing Central City tower in the foreground.

Note the public plaza (looks like a lake), several multi-storey buildings, surrounding the 49 storey tower. This is all on the current North Surrey Rec Centre land, and Central City is in the bottom left hand corner.

The document also mentions:

Creating a new civic plaza at the heart of the civic precinct, mirroring the existing Central City Plaza so that when 102 Avenue (a pedestrian priority street) is closed for events a large gathering space is formed.
