The Surrey Olympic Training Venue, as announced a few months ago, is moving forward quickly. The facility will be 21,000 square feet – almost four times as large as the existing Tom Binnie Community Centre that’s currently on the site. Tom Binnie will be demolished after the new SOTV opens. The new facility is estimated to cost $10.5 million, which will be taken out of the City’s Legacy Fund and repaid over time. The building will constructed in phases, with the multi-purpose space (which VANOC will be using) to be open in February of 2009, and the remainder of the facility, including the double gym, to open in September.

The design and construction management contract was awarded to CEI Architect Planning Interiors in late June. The site was rezoned in early September. With plans to seek public input before construction, and such a tight schedule, we should expect to see mockups very, very soon.
